Abstract:
Prospective clinical observations have suggested that morbidity and mortality of ischemic heart disease in premenopausal women is lower than age-matched men. Exogenous administration of estrogen to postmenopausal women has shown the beneficial effects for reducing cardiovascular events over time compared with untreated women. Although there is still controversy for the final outcomes in clinical trial, a growing body of evidence from preclinical studies has demonstrated protective effects of estrogen on ischemic heart disease. This review summarizes the recent data that show protection by estrogen and its receptor modulators in attenuation of inflammation-mediated myocardial injury especially during reperfusion after ischemia. Potential future directions for using estrogen replacement therapy in treatment of heart ischemia and reperfusion injury are also discussed.
